Couldn't believe it but our local Ad Club got Andy Berlin to speak to our chapter. So of course, I had to go. It was interesting... somewhat disappointing because he didn't have a real coherent presentation but in between rifts he'd land on something he was passionate about and you'd see the genius come out.
He said something that has really stuck with me... that the best advertising people he knew were at their heart insecure. I found this profound and the more I thought about it, the more I tended to agree. Some of the most brilliant minds I've ever worked with had and have an undercurrent of insecurity. But why would that make them better at creating advertising?
I think that insecurity, that need for confirmation from others makes them more perceptive. So, be default they pay better attention to the world, their environment and reactions of others. This observance is what gives them insight and ideas. In effect, their insecurity makes them better at seeing the world and maybe identifying with its inhabitants.
Thoughts anyone?
